Carmen Consoli grew up in rural San Giovanni La Punta, a few kilometres from Catania, in contact with her father Guiseppe’s musical instruments and folklore music, including a guitar belonging to Modugno and blues records, such as those of B.B. King and the Creedance Clearwater Revival.
As a girl, Carmen was in the band, Moon Dog’s Party, which performed in various local pubs playing a repertoire of soul, particularly songs by Janis Joplin, Carmen’s main inspiration, Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin.
Following performances on local and national television channels, such as the tribute to Mia Martini presented by Michele Santoro, she met the producer, Francesco Virlinzi and a fellow Sicilian, Mario Venuti and took part in the Festival of San Remo in 1996, with the song, Amore di plastica, with which she reached the final.
At the festival the following year, she won the title of Big with the song, Confusa e felice, an innovative and courageous track which was rated highly enough by both the industry press and the public, to take her second album into the national sales chart.
